Weekly Photo Challenge: Look Up!

1501 Broadway, aka The Paramount Building, in New York City.

Our theme for the Weekly Photo Challenge this week is:  Look Up.
Our instructions:  For this week’s challenge, take a moment to look up. What do you see?  Is it familiar?  Or does it show you a new perspective on your surroundings?

My daughter and I took a quick girls trip to New York City last month.  We actually spent a lot of time looking up . . . after all, New York City has the second highest number of skyscrapers of any city in the world (Hong Kong has the most).  It was really cloudy (and approaching dusk) the day I took this photo, but when I looked up, I was completely taken with the contrast between the fading gray sky and the blue reflections in the windows of the building.

The Paramount Building, built in 1925, was once the headquarters for Paramount Pictures.  It’s an Art Deco style building, known for its four-sided clock at the top of the tower.  Instead of numbers, the clock features stars for the hours, which echo the Paramount logo.  The building is topped with an ornamental glass globe.

Historical sidebar:  During World War II, the clock and the globe were painted black to comply with blackout orders.  They were restored in 1996.
