Happy National Absinthe Day!!

It’s snowing again in Virginia . . . hatches have been battened, toilet paper purchased, schools & the federal government are shuttered. And with that, I have a little more time than usual in front of my computer. And I’ve just learned it’s National Absinthe Day! The perfect day to re-run my Green Fairy post.

la fee verte absintheAbsinthe, or The Green Fairy, has a reputation as a naughty drink with hallucinogenic superpowers.  I wouldn’t be surprised if The Green Fairy turned up as a super-villain in the next Avengers movie.  I’m not usually one to flirt with danger, but I’ve been curious about Absinthe for years. Does it really cause hallucinations?  Maybe she’s just maligned and misunderstood.

I just re-read Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls, and rekindled my Absinthe curiosity.  Hemingway’s protagonist, Robert Jordan, uses Absinthe to seek temporary shelter from the horrors of war:

“One cup of [Absinthe] took the place of the evening papers, of all the old evenings in cafés …. of all the things he had enjoyed and forgotten and that came back to him when he tasted that opaque, bitter, tongue-numbing, brain-warming, stomach-warming, idea-changing liquid alchemy.”

    1. My ABC Store (in Virginia, we have to buy hard alcohol at a state-controlled store), they sell a 4 oz. bottle of absinthe. It’s great for someone who might want to give it a try, but doesn’t want to commit to buying a full sized bottle. I actually kind of like the stuff, but I would only want it once in a while.
