Finally! A wine movie list created for you and your bestie to drink wine and wonder why you can’t meet someone like this? (romantic comedies) or have we already? (horror movies).
A movie list for you and your significant other that help you ask the question — are we ever going on vacation? (escapism films) or why aren’t we having sex like this? (romantic dramas – or thrillers).
Whatever your genre of choice, there’s a wine movie for you set in wine country about winemakers and lovers, navigating the imaginary cruel world where everything will be paradise and pinot once the credits roll.
22. Wine Country (2019)
An unpretentious comedy starring Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph about a grown-up girls trip to Napa Valley where friends reunite and discover the good, the bad, and the ugly of wrong life turns and lifelong friendships.
Heartfelt and funny with an all-star SNL cast. Directed by Amy Poehler.

21. The Vintner’s Luck (also A Heavenly Vintage) (2011)
An ethereal indie film from acclaimed director Niki Caro (The Whale Rider) and based on the award-winning novel from Elizabeth Knox tells the story of Sobran Jodeau, a peasant winemaker whose biggest dream is to make the perfect vintage wine.
Set in 1808 France, his luck changes when he meets an angel and his wines start to bring acclaim through a divine inspiration. Starring Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) and Gaspard Ulliel (Moon Knight).

20. Year of the Comet (1992)
Margaret Harwood has been sent on a trip to Scotland by her wine merchant father, when she discovers a priceless bottle of wine from 1811, the year of the Great Comet.
The enemies to lovers trope is strong in this film when her father sends his unprofessional assistant Oliver to be her bodyguard to help keep the wine treasure safe and out of greedy hands. Tensions rise between the two, but alas it is a romance so opposites do attract.
Stars Penelope Ann Miller (Dahmer) and Timothy Daly (Private Practice).

19. A Vineyard Romance (2021)
If you’re looking for a sweet, romantic film this one has all the swoons. Magazine writer Samantha Hart (the name is even sweet) is sent back to her home town to write about Hawthorne Vineyards, a premier wedding destination.
But wouldn’t you know it, her ex who broke her heart now runs the vineyards AND (there’s always an AND in sweet, romantic films — he’s about the get married at the vineyard!). What will happen next?

18. The Grapes of Death (1978)
There’s horror on the vines! A young woman goes to live with her fiancé at his winery in the French countryside where she uncovers that the pesticide being sprayed on the vines is turning the locals into killer zombies.
Also could be titled The Walking Drunks. Available to purchase on Amazon.
17. Eye of the Devil (1967)
Another chiller to add to your horror movie night. This film tells the story of a forbidden chateau and its surrounding vineyards where the workers follow pagan rituals on the down-low to call for the sacrifice of the vineyard owner to save this season’s crops.
Seems a reasonable trade.

16. A Perfect Pairing (2022)
Victoria Justice plays a Los Angeles wine executive who is making the move to Australia to land a big client at their vineyard.
This is a romantic comedy so you know, she ends up working on a sheep farm and getting wooly with the resident ranch hand who happens to be really hot and bonus points for his Australian accent.

15. Valentine in the Vineyard (2019)
Is there anything more romantic than being swept away among wine vines?
Frankie and Nate are partners in life and in winemaking and things get crazy when they decide to host their cousin and brother respectively (who happen to be engaged!) to have their wedding at their vineyard.

14. Cement Suitcase (2014)
What to do when you’re the best wine salesman in Yakima Valley and headed for a nervous breakdown?
Filmed in rural wine country in Washington state, Cement Suitcase is a comedy that tells the story of a man who must depend on the help of two unlikely people — one who just broke into his house and the other who is having an affair with his girlfriend.

13. Laughing Heirs (1933)
Also titled Lachende Erben, this romantic comedy from yesteryear is about a young salesman who is on the verge of inheriting a wine estate, but there’s one condition — he can’t drink a drop of alcohol for at least a month.

12. This Earth is Mine (1959)
Rock Hudson stars in this romantic drama set in Prohibition about Elizabeth Rambeau, an British woman who joins her winemaking family in California.
Soap opera storylines infused throughout this family drama filmed in the Napa Valley. Claude Rains (Casablanca) and Jean Simmons (Guys and Dolls) also star. Not currently available for streaming.
11. Uncorked (2020)
Elijah has dreams of becoming a master sommelier (don’t we all?), but he must decide between his dreams and his father’s expectations of him carrying on the family business — a Memphis BBQ joint.
Stars Courtney B. Vance (The Mummy) and Niecy Nash (Reno 911! and Dahmer).
(side note: did anyone else lose their shit when they saw Niecy Nash’s performance in Dahmer?)

10. Paris, Wine & Romance (2020)
Isabella owns her family’s Oregon winery makes an ambitious decision to enter the prestigious wine competition in Paris.
She meets Jacques, her biggest competitor and a romance blossoms. Like the 1973 Judgement of Paris competition, but on a much smaller, Hallmarky sort of scale.

9. A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Keanu Reeves (pre-Matrix) stars in this romantic drama about Paul, a young World War II soldier who returns from war lost in his marriage.
Working as a traveling salesman, he meets the daughter of an affluent vineyard owner who happens to be pregnant and unmarried.
Paul poses as her husband to ease the burden of her angry father in a decision that will change both their lives forever.

8. Back to Burgundy (2018)
In this touching drama, Jean travels back to Bourgogne after being away for ten years to see her father, a winemaker, before he passes away.
Jean, his brother, and his sister take over the family business and work together to protect the estate while learning the ups and downs of winemaking.

7. Bottle Shock (2008)

This dramedy takes us back to the early days of California winemaking and the infamous Judgement of Paris blind wine tasting competition where California took gold.
Stars Alan Rickman (love, love, love), Chris Pine, and Bill Pullman. You’ll have to excuse Chris Pine’s horrible wig.

6. You Will Be My Son (2013)
Paul de Marseul owns his prestigious family winery, but has little faith in his son, Martin. He wishes he was more successful and hardworking, but alas there’s always his estate manager’s son who fits the bill.
Will Paul turn on his own son to fulfill his dream of having a responsible heir to the vineyard?

5. A Good Year (2006)
Russell Crowe stars as Max Skinner, a money-hungry bond trader who is forced to leave his privileged life in London and make the sojourn to France to dispose of his dead uncle’s house and vineyards.
Money takes a back seat in Max’s life as he becomes seduced by the beautiful setting, local food and wine and of course a beautiful local named Fanny played by Marion Cotillard (Inception).
Directed by Ridley Scott. Streaming on STARZ.
4. El Camino Del Vino (2010)
A highly regarded sommelier loses his palate in the middle of a wine festival and thus the journey begins to get his taste back and his soul.
Shot in South America in the wine mountains of Mendoza.

3. The Secret of Santa Vittorio (1969)
Anthony Quinn stars in this war comedy about a village outside of Rome who is famous for producing wine, hides a million bottles from the Germans during WWII.

2. Autumn Tale (1998) (Conte d’automne)
In this romantic dramedy, a widow’s best friend tries to find her a new husband, but the ad posted in the newspaper attracts more than one possibility.
The dialogue is engaging and revealing and the ending is pure joy.

This is the film that taught you to question your love for Merlot. Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church star in the iconic comedy about two middle-age men who go on a week-long road trip through California wine country before one of them gets married.
Together they share in the anxiety about what the future holds and which paths they want to follow. Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay. Streaming on HBO Max.

Yes! Watch all you want. Netflix made Wine Country. Starring “SNL” alums Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch (spoiler, she hurts her back), Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell and Emily Spivey.
What should I watch with a glass of wine?
Watching Bottle Shock will have you out of your seat cheering with delight. Make sure you have a Napa Cab or Chardonnay in your hand. Uncorked is very, very good also and lands at 11 on our list.
