The Frostbite Martini

I’m working on a blog post about Icewine.  In the throes of research this afternoon, I came across a recipe for a drink called the Frostbite Martini, created by Aaron Merlino, the bartender at the Four Seasons in San Francisco.  I don’t usually mix drinks at home (I’m a wine girl — open, pour, drink), but due diligence requires me to make the Frostbite Martini tonight . . . and share it with you!

Ingredients:

2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Iniskillin Icewine
1/2 ounce white cranberry or white grape juice
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon simple syrup
Superfine sugar
A twist of lemon
1 teaspoon Creme de Cassis
Five or six frozen grapes

Naturally, I had exactly none of the ingredients on hand, so I had to make an emergency trip to the store . . .

How many Frostbite Martinis am I going to have to make to get through a bottle of Creme de Cassis?

Directions:
Fill a shaker with ice.  Add the vodka, Icewine, juices and syrup.  Give it a good shake and pour into a chilled martini glass rimmed with sugar. Twist the lemon over the drink to release its oils, then garnish the rim of the glass with it.  Add the cassis and let it sink to the bottom of the glass. Serve the frozen grapes in a dish on the side.

Makes 1 drink.  (Sure . . . I’m only going to drink one).

Voilà . . . my Frostbite Martini!   Salud!
